FORM VS. FUNCTION or should FORM FOLLOW FUNCTION?
Show dog, Champion bloodlines, Best in show. These terms are just a few of the countless “accolades” and marketing slogans you hear in the dog world. Often times, the fact a dog has “champion bloodlines” is deemed as a reason to mark up the price of puppies, that the offspring of “championed” dogs are somehow superior based on the merits of the show record of the parents. So this is, in our opinion, the major factor at play in a wide variety of issues that are devastating the modern canine world. While titling a dog is certainly a financial and time commitment, we feel that conformation Titles only address half of what a dog is comprised of.

Breed Standard: This is a term that has become very fluid. Standards of breed registries are altered every few years and often in our opinion, often to the detriment of the breed and to the benefit of the those who stand to gain the most from the changes. We also believe that those same standards that are lauded to be an" Improvements to the Breed" often are a large reason the Veterinarians waiting rooms are so full.
The Mastiff from the beginning of their conception were intended as a guardian type dog first and foremost. Dogs bred with a purpose in mind, a job to do. Have you noticed these mastiff type dogs nowadays can often be as friendly to strangers as your average Lab? Many breeders, in an attempt to adhere to breed standard (to keep the value of their dogs up as well as basic inclusion to the club) started breeding dogs with the only true qualifying factor to be an eligible breeding dog being that of FORM. So the physical appearance of a dog is now the determining factor in a qualified breeding dog, because you will not even be able to show a dog successfully that is not of “Breed Standard” even if the dog is the absolute specimen in every other way except it is a inch too short or a inch too tall. With this being the way things are run, temperament, health and vitality, intelligence are all very secondary factors in considering breeding prospects. We believe that Form and Function must always be taken into consideration when producing a future generation.
With that being said there are breeders of Purebred and Hybrid dogs who are in it for the right reasons. Those breeders will have health test records, do temperament testing and likely will often select your puppy for you based on the criteria they have gathered. Those are reputable breeders.
